RCPowers.com Community Video entry page

The members at RCPowers.com forums are running themselves a video competition using the older V1 style Easybuild parkjets.  You can find the discussion thread here:

When the entry section goes up I'll start a new page with the guys' entries on it.  This is just a page so people can see the buildup to the entry!

The competition rules were announced to day so it was time to make some decisions.  I've got 4 V1 planes to choose from and all of them are nice flyers.  The problem is that the rules say I have to pick one and go with it!

I've picked the F-22 V1 (You can see it's build instructions here to see what goes into making one) because it's a nice "all round" plane and has a fair amount of simple thrust vectoring across the elevons for extra maneuverability.

Rather than build a new one set up especially for the video, I've fallen back on the one I already have with the stock setup.  Elevons generally make a plane less responsive than the elevator/aileron combo but I've found with the F-22 that if you make it a little heavy it also makes it more graceful.  It's got no rudders, which I'm going to miss when filming for the comp, but I'll make do.

Besides, I like showing off what these planes can do on just the basic setup and a 2s battery!  Mr Scott Lott did a really good job with these planes.

Yesterday I picked my music.  I was having a hard time with it really.  If you watch my videos I've got some standards that I use because I like them.  Partly because the music is good, partly because it's nice if your Aeroplane videos contain song names like "No reason not to fly", "Drift Away" and "Robbie's Rocketship"!

I went outside my standards this time because I wanted something less familiar.  I've had a couple pieces sitting there that I've been looking for an excuse to use too which made it a harder decision.  The choice wasn't between the music itself but the feelings from them.  "Cool" (techno/heavy rock/ etc), "Savage" (tribal themed/Techno), Upbeat (pop, rock, some techno) or Happy (a large variety).

I get a LOT of my music from music tracker sites btw.  That music scene pumps out some good stuff in a lot of genres.  You can usually download all of the music for free and the guys/gals there are usually happy to let you use it for youtube vids if you ask.  The Mrs used to review for a few back in the day so I get the added bonus that her friends NEVER say no when I ask ;).

In the end it came down to two pieces, Tribal and another, but the tribal piece was too short for my liking.  Being Tribal it's a bit repetitive already so I didn't want to edit it to loop some and make it longer.  It's also got the drawback that it's from a video game soundtrack ("Auto Assault" if any of you remember that one) but I've always loved it.

Anyway, to get back into the swing of things I did a dry run using the Tribal music from AA I discarded and some video I already had.  I need to get back into the groove of more complicated editing.  Last time I did anything like I am contemplating I did it with super 8 film and about a thousand rolls of splice tape!!

The unfinished dry run (and I don't know if I'll ever finish it, it was just to practice):

Maybe some more tomorrow!

In the end I chose something more happy and upbeat because the RCPowers Easybuild promo video has always hooked me good!  Something a little old-school too, perhaps I'm just showing my age!

Edit:  Ok, finished it.

I havn't had a lot of time to spend on the blog lately so updates sort of fell by the wayside.  I've finished the video though :).
